Every day in the United States, over 18,000 people are injured or made ill on the job from hazards that are almost entirely preventable. The Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) educates and empowers workers and communities to take an active role in making workplaces safe, healthy, dignified, and just. LOHP is a public service program of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. For nearly 35 years, LOHP has worked to prevent illness and injury in the workplace and raise awareness of the social and economic costs of hazardous workplace conditions for individuals, communities, businesses, and the environment. What We Do
Training For Action
LOHP's lively, interactive training programs, presented in several languages, encourage workers and community members to take action to improve safety conditions in the workplace. Training increases basic skills such as identifying hazards and making the case for safety and covers hazards ranging from chemicals and hazardous waste to workplace violence and ergonomics. Linking Campus and Community
LOHP conducts participatory research on health and safety issues and makes academic expertise accessible to those in the community who need it. We also help develop the next generation of health and safety professionals through class presentations and student internship programs that educate students about real world problems and solutions in diverse workplaces.Learn more
Providing Resources
LOHP produces educational materials in multiple languages on many safety and health topics, tailored to meet a range of language and literacy needs. Many publications are available online. We have a library that is open to the public, and offer technical assistance and referrals to medical and legal services.
