Caring for yourself while caring for others

As part of LOHP’s Homecare Project, a community-based participatory research project to develop and evaluate interventions designed to improve the safety and health of homecare workers in Alameda County, LOHP developed the handbook: “Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others: Practical Tips for Homecare Workers.”

Health and Safety Training Kits

This LOHP curriculum is designed to help trainers facilitate informal classes of workers, environmental justice activists, or community residents using action-oriented, participatory methods. It is available in four languages, and was developed by LOHP in collaboration with the Southwest Network for Environmental and Economic Justice.

Returning to Work After a Job Injury: Tools for Injured Workers and Unions

This LOHP booklet is now available in English, Spanish, and Chinese. It includes important information and resources that unions can use to negotiate with employers to allow injured members to return to work.

Heat Hazards in Agriculture

The past few summers have shown that the risk of heat illness is one of the most serious challenges to the safety and health of farmworkers. This new training guide helps employers plan how to prevent heat illness among the crew and provide training to workers. The training guide is available in English and Spanish, and includes complete instructions for teaching workers about heat hazards along with checklists, factsheets, and additional resources.

Janitorial Safety Training Materials

The Janitorial Safety Training Program is now available for small business owners and managers who need to train janitorial employees working alone or in small teams to clean buildings. The training materials include a training guide, and focus on health and safety in the janitorial industry.

Restaurant Safety Training Materials

The restaurant training materials are available to read or download in English and Spanish at the website of the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers' Compensation.

Tailgate Training for California Construction Workers

This LOHP guidebook can help construction foremen and other trainers conduct effective safety training sessions on the job. It has detailed lesson plans on 14 topics. Lessons are organized in an easy question-and-answer format that encourages worker participation.

Workers' Compensation Guidebook

This guidebook gives an overview of the California Workers' Compensation system as of November 2006. It is meant to help workers with job injuries understand their basic legal rights, the steps to take to request workers’ compensation benefits, and where to seek further information and help if necessary.

Working in a Lead-Safe School

This is a 28-page booklet used in our training program for California elementary school maintenance workers. It describes the hazards that lead presents for both workers and school children, and explains safe work practices.
